Ohio State University Department of Dance
Eccentric Motion Workshop: Monday August 9 – Wednesday August 18th
(excluding Sunday)
In this two-week workshop, we will develop multi-layered personal
movement practices. We will use principles from the Alexander Technique,
Emergent Improvisation, Laban and inspirations from vaudeville,
eccentric dancers from the 20’s and 30’s*, voguing, and clowning
to build our own improvisational languages. Each day will begin
with movement investigations that teach body use and awareness.
We will learn to observe our own movement patterns and preferences
and to consciously make choices about composing with these inclinations.
Class studies will culminate in small emergent improvisation forms
- guided by studies of weight, developmental structuring, character,
transformation and vernacular dance.
*Eccentric Dance-an entertainment genre that evolved from the underground
nightclubs of the 20’s and 30’s, with origins in Vaudeville, Charleston,
and Lindy Hop. It is a form of visual comedy that uses a vocabulary
of idiosyncratic movements that is characterized by a highly rigorous
and extreme physicality. Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton are two
of the stars that emerged from this movement. Eccentric dance also
came from such underground masters as: James Barton, Danzi Goodell,
Hal LeRoy, and Buster West.

This is a hybrid technique class that draws from West African dance
from Senegal and Burkina Faso and improvisation dance techniques.
We will have live drumming. We will work to build and refine skills
pertaining to contemporary dance including: polyrhythms and spine
undulations, improvisational skills, and executing full-bodied movement
sequences. Dancers will be given the opportunity to practice material
with enough repetition to be able to inhabit the movement with confidence
while making individual choices about dynamics, phrasing, presence/performance,
and improvisation.

Classes and workshops with dancer Jill Becker
The Fluid Core
Ongoing class meets Fridays 12-1 at the Presbyterian Church
$10/class
Working with the idea/fact of the fluid core, we do exercises and
movement explorations that work deep, organic connections in the
body. The result is greater freedom of movement, an increased sense
of groundedness and an overall sense of wellbeing.
Modern Dance
Ongoing class meets Saturdays 10-11 at the Presbyterian Church
$10/class
We begin each class with floor exercises to awaken, stretch and
strengthen the middle body. We then progress to standing and traveling
dance movement phrases that are based in musicality. There is often
an opportunity to work together with other dancers. The atmosphere
is relaxed and playful.

Improvisational Dance Class
Mondays, 4:30-6:00, June 28-July 12
This class merges an improvisational warm-up to music from around
the world with solo, duo and group explorations. The warm-up uses
physiological connections in the body as a way to find deep and
new ways of moving that work within the safety of the body's structure.
Interactive explorations create a sense of focused play and community.
While the initial warm-up is internally focused, the later part
of class is based on compositional ideas of performance improvisation.
The last class will be pat of the Yellow Springs Experience 2010,
Ten Days of Arts and Culture
Bryan Center Dance Studio (2nd floor), 100 Dayton St.
Yellow Springs, Ohio
Phone: (937) 767-2646
