Cori Olinghouse, Movement Research Artist in Residence, Ohio State University Department of Dance

Eccentric Motion Workshop: Monday August 9 – Wednesday August 18th (excluding Sunday)

In this two-week workshop, we will develop multi-layered personal movement practices. We will use principles from the Alexander Technique, Emergent Improvisation, Laban and inspirations from vaudeville, eccentric dancers from the 20’s and 30’s*, voguing, and clowning to build our own improvisational languages. Each day will begin with movement investigations that teach body use and awareness. We will learn to observe our own movement patterns and preferences and to consciously make choices about composing with these inclinations. Class studies will culminate in small emergent improvisation forms - guided by studies of weight, developmental structuring, character, transformation and vernacular dance.

*Eccentric Dance-an entertainment genre that evolved from the underground nightclubs of the 20’s and 30’s, with origins in Vaudeville, Charleston, and Lindy Hop. It is a form of visual comedy that uses a vocabulary of idiosyncratic movements that is characterized by a highly rigorous and extreme physicality. Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton are two of the stars that emerged from this movement. Eccentric dance also came from such underground masters as: James Barton, Danzi Goodell, Hal LeRoy, and Buster West.

Bio:
Cori is a dancer, teacher, and choreographer based in Brooklyn, NY. She was a member of the Trisha Brown Company from 2002 to 2006. During her time there, she performed as a soloist at the Bolshoi Theater and worked with Trisha Brown on O Zlozony / O Composite for the Paris Opera Ballet. Recently, Cori performed for Bill Irwin in the May 2008 premiere of The Happiness Lecture at the Philadelphia Theater Company. Her own work has been presented at Dixon Place, Bennington College, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, Spoke the Hub, Judson Church, and the Movement Research Improvisation Festival. Teaching credits include: the Trisha Brown Studio, Bennington College, New York University, Fordham University, Rutgers University, Hunter College, Sushi Visual and Performing Arts Gallery, London Contemporary Dance School, and Tseh Moscow Summer Dance School. As a choreographer and improviser, Cori is interested in how the shapeshifting capabilities of the human body can suggest imagery and meaning. Cori is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique (graduated from Manhattan Center for the Alexander Technique) and maintains a private practice in Manhattan and Brooklyn. She is currently a Movement Research Artist-in-Residence and is studying voguing with Archie Burnett, and Benny Ninja from the House of Ninja.

While the initial warm-up is internally focused, the later part of class is based on compositional ideas of performance improvisation.
