The University of Akron’s School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration celebrated the opening of its $11.1 million Guzzetta Hall dance facility in September 2006, bringing all of the University’s academic performing arts programs – music, dance, theatre, and arts administration – under one roof. Parsons Dance Company, David Parsons, director, was in residence during a week-long celebration. Master classes were given and a gala performance by Parsons Dance took place at the University’s E. J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.
The new building features seven large technology enhanced studios, including the Francia Holiday Albrecht Dance performance studio, an alternative/experimental performance venue and is home to the University’s BA and BFA Dance programs and its preparatory program, Dance Institute. A design and lighting lab/classroom, technology enhanced classrooms, scene shop, costume shop, physiotherapy treatment room, Pilates studio, conference room, offices, and locker rooms are included in the addition.
The University has announced a new collaboration with Dance Cleveland that will result in the presenting of a major modern dance company at E. J. Thomas Hall. The School of Dance Theatre and Arts Administration will build upon these annual performances with residencies and master classes designed to enhance our students’ educational experiences.
