Wexner Center Residency Award

William Forsythe: Transfigurations
“To reduce choreography to a single definition is not to understand the most crucial of its mechanisms: to resist and reform previous conceptions of its definition.” William Forsythe, “Choreographic Objects”

Vanguard American choreographer—and 2002 Wexner Prize recipient—William Forsythe has revolutionized classical ballet for our time with his bold, contemporary works. In recent years, with the establishment of The Forsythe Company as an independent platform for his work, he’s extended his choreographic thinking into new forms such as installations for gallery and public spaces, video, digital media, and publications. For Forsythe, these projects are part of a larger sphere of interest he terms “choreographic objects.”

Transfigurations is the first presentation of a significant body of Forsythe’s installation projects in this country. In it, you’ll see how the dance maker and performer, developing his concepts through working from the body, is now projecting his ideas into new mediums and new ways of presentation. A highlight of the show is Monster Partitur, a hybrid performance/installation piece that you can experience during multiple free performances in the gallery itself and as an installation of sculptural elements and text throughout the run of the exhibition. You’ll also see four of Forsythe’s key video installations plus his new web project, Synchronous Objects for One Flat Thing, reproduced, which Forsythe developed at Ohio State in collaboration with the university’s top-rated Department of Dance and Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design.

Transfigurations. Dancer Alessio Silvestrin delivers a mesmerizing performance against a backdrop of sculptural elements created from life-size models of human skeletons and line drawings traced from these gnarled forms, which also serve as cues in the performer’s score. The work is a condensation of and companion to Forsythe’s Bessie Award winning You made me a monster.

Toledo Ballet celebrates its 70th anniversary season with a once-in-a-lifetime tribute to Toledo Ballet founder and Artistic Director Emerita Marie Bollinger Vogt on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at The Valentine Theater. The evening will begin with a loving toast to Madame Vogt, followed by RÉVÉRENCE: A Tribute to Marie Bollinger Vogt. This performance will celebrate some of Madame Vogt's best loved choreography over the past seven decades as well as present new, original pieces that catapult Toledo Ballet towards its next seventy years.
The performance includes numerous classical pieces, including Handel's WATER MUSIC, SALTERELLO, and DIVERTIMENTO, as well as original dances that reflect the tone of each of the past seven decades by incorporating Broadway pieces as well as contemporary ballet pieces.
RÉVÉRENCE Artistic Director Michael Lang uses his nearly twenty years of Broadway performing to create a production that whimsically reflects the history of Toledo Ballet, including voice-overs of Toledo Ballet alumnae and others with a close connection to the Toledo Ballet founder. Several of the pieces performed in the past will be staged by Toledo Ballet School Director Lisa Mayer, also a veteran of Broadway and Toledo Ballet alumna.
The performance will conclude with ballet legend Soili Arvola leading cast members and Toledo Ballet alumnae in a beautifully choreographed révérence from the stage to Madame Vogt.

Antaeus Dance MOLT
premieres April 30 – May 3, 2009
Gordon Square Theatre
Cleveland Public Theatre / DanceWorks09
Join Antaeus Dance for the premiere of another compelling evening-length dancework by Director Joan Meggitt. MOLT explores the transformation that results from stripping away undesirable habits and patterns to reveal the essence of the individual. As with Antaeus Dance’s three previous evening-length works, MOLT is emerging from a collaborative process that includes individual and collective contributions from the dancers.
The performance features new music by composer Greg D’Alessio. The dancers will inhabit a stunning set, created by artist James Longs, which is both a physical home for the performance and a metaphor for the beleaguered psyche.
Come be transformed with dancers Amy Compton-Schulz, Marissa Glorioso, Jenita McGowan, Sherri Mills, and Shanna Sheline.
