Jacob’s
Pillow is recruiting choreographers for its
Choreographers’ Lab program,
which this year will
focus on Artistic Process/Community Interaction. The
program will run August 19-27. Please forward this
message to all choreographers, age 24 and older, with
an interest in creating work with diverse communities,
connecting their work to a school’s curriculum, and/or
creating work from their community- based experiences.
Led by leading community
arts practitioner, author,
soloist, and choreographer Celeste Miller, whose work
is deeply influenced by the aesthetic issues and
politics of community involvement in the artistic
process, the program will bring together 12 colleagues
to consider how to create meaningful,
aesthetically-driven choreography with community
groups.

refined, or crafted, over the course to identify the
resonant themes and source material specific to each
choreographer. Daily movement labs, journal writing,
discussion sessions, and selected readings and videos
will delve deeply into the professional rigor required
to create community dance-making experiences while
fully involving the artist’s aesthetic points of view,
inquiry, and inspiration:

that best engage community
groups
Motivating collaborators to fulfill art-making
expectations
Identifying resonate themes and source material
that inspire creativity
Meeting academic objectives while providing an
original, artmaking experience
These 2 weeks will

during which these choreographers will have a chance
to reflect in the presence of colleagues, to
collaborate, to get feedback, to fully immerse
themselves in their work to see how it connects with
community/the myriad of ways we can participate with
community.
Attendance
at Festival events, including performances,
and time in the Pillow’s Archive are integral to the
program. The two-week program fee of $1,200 includes
tuition, room, board, and entrance to Festival events.

I’m
looking for a choreographer and dancers
to help put together a show based around the songs on my upcoming
new CD which are all about bats (the generally creepy flying
mammals). What I’ve got in mind is having two pairs of
children(ages?)in bat costumesI’vealready designed doing
dance routines on my right and left. I can play guitar and do
a “lighter” routine in the middle. Between songs
the children would interact doing jokes about bats or other
skits while the stage is adjusted for the next song.
Initially
the show will be performed around Ohio at nature centers, museums,
and other auditorium type settings. People would buy
tickets to the show and the dancers would get the opportunity
to earn money. They would see what it takes to put on a uniqueeducational
fun show for an appreciative audience.
Eventually
I will tour the country doing the same show. So let me know
if this sounds intriguing to you and you’d like to talk
about possibilities. I can get you a CD of the songs for your
review along with pictures of the bat costume.Contact

Studies - Performing and Visual Arts
The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program, one of several Fulbright
initiatives administered by the Council for International Exchange
of Scholars (CIES), is looking for qualified academics and professionals
in the field of American Studies to join its Roster. The SeniorSpecialists

opportunities (grant lengths range from two to six weeks) for
U.S. faculty and professionals. Grantees have the opportunity
to interact with host institutions abroad in a variety of ways.

and visual arts include:
· Promotion of the Contact Improvisation technique in
Uruguay through introductory workshops and intensive trainings
for advanced practitioners and teachers of the form.
· Participation in workshops on African American musical
traditions such as the music and cultural heritage of low country
Gulluh/Geechee communities.
· Consulting on curriculum development for a new M.A.
degree in East-West Drama at the Chinese University of Hong
Kong.

Rhythm Jazz Technique to the faculty and dance students at an
Arts Academy in Finland.
Applicants in American Studies must have multidisciplinary credentials
that strongly reflect a background of either an American Studies
or a comparative American Studies focus; a combination of teaching,
research and study from a historical and/or cultural context.
For performing and visual artists, performance and/or work must
be directly or comparatively linked to American studies.
The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program differs from the traditional
Fulbright Scholar competition in that CIES builds a roster of
specialists in select fields through an online application process.
Applicants recommended by independent specialist peer review
committees and approved by the J. William Fulbright Foreign
Scholarship Board (FSB) become candidates for Fulbright Senior
Specialists awards and remain on the Roster for five years.
Specialists candidates may then be matched with approved projectrequests
developed by academic institutions overseas. This may be an
opportunity for specialists to collaborate with existing contacts
and further develop institutional linkages. It is important
to note that limits apply to previous Fulbright scholars. Please
visit our Web site to review the revised guidelines.
For more information on the program and its possibilities in
American Studies, please visit www.cies.org/specialists, email
